I hope this message finds you well during these unprecedented times. I’d like to share some exciting developments from our CHSU College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Last January, the CHSU-COM leadership, faculty and staff moved into our state-of-the-art medical school building located at 2500 Alluvial Avenue in Clovis following our expedited 18-month CHSU campus expansion project. We are fortunate that our facility was prepped and ready for students before the shelter in place orders were enacted.

CHSU-COM Meets All Standards and Requirements for Pre-Accreditation

Recently, we learned from the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) that the CHSU-COM has met all standards and requirements for our Pre-Accreditation status, following completion of our recent report and site visit conducted in February 2020.  Pre-Accreditation is a milestone achievement and the highest level awarded to COMs that have not yet graduated their first class.

Our entire team has been diligently working – mostly remotely - on final preparations to welcome our inaugural class of medical students on July 21, 2020.

Inaugural Class of Medical Students to Matriculate July 2020

I am delighted to announce that our CHSU-COM inaugural class will include 75 highly qualified students. Here are some important statistics about the accepted students in our CHSU-COM inaugural class:

  • Over 75% are from California,
  • 28% are local students from the Central Valley,
  • 16 different languages are spoken by this diverse group of students, which is critical to help bridge the language barrier that many underserved populations experience when seeking health care
  • 35% of the class speaks Spanish.

Recruitment Underway for Second Cohort of CHSU Medical Students

The CHSU-COM has already begun recruiting for the second cohort that will begin in fall 2021. Despite MCAT testing being paused due to COVID-19, the CHSU-COM will begin reviewing applications prior to receiving MCAT scores so students are encouraged to begin the application process now.

Historic Medical School Grand Opening Celebration

Since our ribbon cutting ceremony was postponed this past April, we are making plans to celebrate our recent achievements this summer.

Thank you to all who have contributed towards our success. These achievements wouldn’t be possible without the support of our partners, donors and the community. I look forward to celebrating our next milestone together! Until then, take care and stay healthy.

Sincerely,

John Graneto, DO
Dean, College of Osteopathic Medicine
